Why We Chose These Plants

For this modern Glenorchy build, the client wanted a predominantly native palette to tie in with the surrounding landscape and create a private oasis while retaining open lawn space. The house’s Scandinavian-inspired architecture called for a design that complements this style, featuring tall trees to frame the house and striking autumn colors.

The focal points of the garden are the key tree species: Fuscospora solandri (Black Beech) and Betula Jacquemontii (Himalayan Birch). Strategically placed throughout the garden, these trees frame the lawn and anchor the two-story structure. The birch trees are especially striking, offering brilliant autumn color with their white trunks contrasting beautifully against the native shrubbery.

The planting design features loose drifts and organic groupings. Medium shrubs such as Chionochloa flavicans and Chionochloa rubra add graceful, arching blades that introduce movement and texture. Muehlenbeckia Astonii and Hebe Wiri Mist provide soft, mounding textures, while Muehlenbeckia Axillaris serves as a ground cover, unifying the garden with a neat appearance. Astelia fragrans add silver tones and strong fronds, enhancing texture and visual interest.

For the septic area, Carex secta and Apodasmia similis are used for their suitability to wet conditions and smaller root systems. For the medium - large shrubs we selected Plagianthus regius and Cordyline australis, offering additional screening and dynamic textural interest throughout the garden. Pseudopanax Crassifolius is planted closer to the house to frame it with its architectural foliage while anchoring the tall structure.

To introduce vibrant color to the outdoor living area, Verbena and Gaura Soda Pop are included, providing flowering interest and colour contrast against the Red Tussock.

This garden design blends seamlessly with the landscape, featuring a carefully curated native palette enhanced by a few exotic species.
