Cordyline australis, commonly known as Ti Kouka/Cabbage Tree, is a tall tree that, once mature, is a standout for its trunk structure. Cordyline australis can be grown in coastal, swampy, drought, or sun and wind-exposed locations. In summer, it will produce large flowering spikes, which often attract native birds. Cabbage trees are effective planted in groups and are easily established. Good for shelter and riparian planting, providing bank and soil stabilisation. Grows to 10m height x 3m width.

Trimming: Prune Cordyline australis (Cabbage Tree) in late winter or early spring. Remove dead or damaged leaves by cutting them back to the main stem. For aesthetic purposes, you can also remove any lower leaves that have naturally died off.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower stalks after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent unwanted seedlings.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Cordyline australis typically thrives without much additional feeding, so avoid over-fertilising.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Cordyline australis is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control: Inspect for common pests such as scale insects and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and ensure good air circulation around the plant to deter pests.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of fungal diseases like root rot and leaf spot. Ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot, and remove any affected leaves if leaf spot occurs. Apply a suitable fungicide if necessary, and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues.
