Plagianthus regius - commonly known as ribbonwood or manatu - is a graceful New Zealand tree. With dense foliage, it is very fast-growing with an upright form and super tough which makes it great for exposed sites. As the tree matures, the small juvenile foliage is replaced with larger foliage. Creamy-white flowers. Plagianthus regius grows to a maximum height of 12m, making it perfect as a specimen or shelter tree.
Trimming: Prune Plagianthus regius in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and encourage strong growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote good air circulation.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth and potentially weaken the plant.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Plagianthus regius is fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
Pest Control: This plant is generally pest-resistant. However, keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids and caterpillars. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Plagianthus regius is typically disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. If you notice signs of disease, such as leaf spots or mildew, remove the affected parts and treat with a suitable fungicide if necessary. Ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot.
