The Brief

Perhaps the most glaring objective for this garden, was to break up the significant 4000sqm section while blending the large scale home to the landscape. An outdoor area to be enjoyed at leisure was a requirement, catering for a notable water feature. A contemporary and formal visual was necessary to meet the clients taste while complimenting the style of the home.

Why We Chose These Plants
Choosing plants that complimented the desired contemporary visual was forefront of mind when curating this plant palette. Aside from layout, colour and form are two significant factors that come into play when trying to achieve such an aesthetic. Topiary (plants trimmed to maintain defined shapes) lends itself in many situations, but is especially suited to creating a formal appearance.

In this garden Liquidambar standards have been used to create impact up the driveway while the Thuja smaragd contribute their form in the outdoor area. Their pillar-like shape brings a commanding presence to the space, assisting in ‘rooming in’ the area, while also grounding the home with their height. The best thing about these specimen is that they hold their impeccable form on their own, requiring no maintenance.

Hedging is another significant element of this garden, creating clean and defined lines which are a crucial factor of any formal garden. Choisya ternata was selected due to it’s ability to successfully be maintained as a smaller hedge while also offering a gentle scent from the white flowers produced.

Equally as important are the elements that bring balance by softening the formality. Miscanthus and Gaura have been selected to contribute a gentle sense of movement to the garden while still embracing the contemporary theme. It is such plants that also lend seasonal variation to the garden along with Lavender, Hydrangea Limelight and Standard Roses. Often, it is simply tones of green and white that have the most impact when striving for a contemporary finish, hence the selection of white flowering plants with a subtle hint of colour provided by the Lavender

Careful consideration was made to create an extension of the home that felt exclusive yet inviting, all while accentuating the grandeur of this home.
