Thuja Smaragd, also known as Emerald Cedar, is a versatile evergreen conifer that adds year-round interest to your garden. Originating from the family Cupressaceae, this cultivar is known for its compact, pyramidal form and brilliant emerald-green foliage. The leaves are scale-like, tightly packed and arranged in flattened sprays, giving the tree a fine-textured, feathery appearance. The foliage retains its vibrant colour throughout the year and releases a pleasant aroma when crushed. Thuja Smaragd is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moist soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and generally resistant to pests and diseases. With a slow to moderate growth rate, it reaches a mature height of about 3m and a width of 75cm, making it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, and foundation plantings.

Trimming: Trim Thuja Smaragd in late spring or early summer to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Lightly prune any stray branches throughout the growing season to keep a neat appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth that may require more frequent trimming.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, Thuja Smaragd is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Monitor for spider mites and bagworms. Treat spider mite infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Handpick and destroy bagworms to prevent damage.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of root rot, especially in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. Look out for browning or dying branches, which may indicate fungal infections. Prune affected areas and apply a suitable fungicide if necessary. Regularly inspect for any signs of disease and address issues promptly to maintain plant health.
