Lavandula x intermedia Grosso is the preferred lavender for cutting and perfect for edging an herb garden or perennial border in a sunny spot. It is a cross between the cold-hardy English lavender and the tough Portuguese lavender. Loves a hot, sunny position and does not require a lot of water. Flowers are a bright-purple colour and flower stems are long, ideal for picking to dry. Height to 50cm to 1 metre.

Trimming: Prune lightly after the first flush of flowers in late summer to encourage a second flowering and maintain a compact shape. In late winter or early spring, trim back about one-third of the plant’s height, avoiding cutting into old wood, to promote vigorous growth.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous flowering and prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production.

Fertilising: Lavender Grosso thrives in lean soil, so minimal fertilisation is needed. Apply a light dose of balanced fertiliser in early spring if necessary. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can lead to excessive foliage growth and fewer flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Lavender Grosso is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly. Ensure the soil is well-drained, as lavender is prone to root rot in waterlogged conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but monitor for aphids and spittlebugs. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage infestations if they occur.

Disease Management: Lavender Grosso is susceptible to root rot if the soil is not well-drained. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. If fungal diseases such as leaf spot or mildew appear, remove affected parts and treat with a suitable fungicide. Plant in a sunny location with good air circulation to help prevent disease.
