Liquidambar Gumball

Trimming: Prune your Liquidambar 'Gumball' in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches to maintain its spherical shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can cause an imbalance in its natural form.

Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Apply around the base of the plant, ensuring it reaches the root zone. Follow up with another feeding in late summer if the plant's growth appears slow.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, water deeply during prolonged dry periods. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent waterlogging.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and scale insects, which can affect new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Encourage beneficial insects like ladybirds to keep pest populations in check.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of root rot, particularly in poorly drained soils. Symptoms include wilting, yellowing leaves, and stunted growth. Improve drainage and avoid overwatering to prevent this issue. Leaf spot can also occur; remove and destroy affected leaves and apply a fungicide if necessary.
