How It Started

The Brief
This site had seen some recent renovations, and the clients were after a garden design to complement their newly completed house. They wanted a vibrant garden that offered year-round seasonality, including deciduous trees and flowering interest. Hardscaping elements such as the upper lawn retaining wall, stairways, and access points were all taken into consideration and designed with functionality and aesthetics in mind.

Why We Chose These Plants
For this recently renovated site, we designed a garden that blends vibrant flowering species with evergreen elements to enhance the various outdoor spaces. Prunus lusitanica was selected for the road boundary to provide effective privacy screening. To create a striking house entry, Cornus Eddies White Wonder was chosen for its eye-catching white flowers, adding seasonal highlights and anchoring the two-story structure.
In the shaded deck garden, we incorporated a mix of Ligularia Reniformis, Bergenia Wanaka Snow, Chionochloa flavicans, and Agapanthus Finn. Ligularia Reniformis features attractive heart-shaped leaves, while Bergenia Wanaka Snow provides lush foliage and neat white flowers. Chionochloa flavicans adds graceful, arching blades for movement and texture, and Agapanthus Finn contributes bold, globe-like flower heads in summer. These selections were to ensure a neat and appealing view from the lower bedrooms.
Magnolia Kay Parris frames the upper terraced lawn area, offering privacy and serving as a standout feature with its large white flowers. Hydrangea Limelight was chosen to provide visual interest throughout the seasons with its large, dynamic flower heads.
Gaura So White delivers continuous flowering from summer to autumn with its delicate white blooms. Nandina Firepower introduces vibrant red and orange hues, adding seasonal color contrasts. Parthenocissus was included to climb the back retaining wall, providing a green backdrop to frame the garden.
This garden complements the modern renovations with its vibrant seasonal interest and thoughtful integration with the property’s hardscaping elements, resulting in a cohesive and dynamic outdoor space.
