Parthenocissus tri. veitchii
Parthenocissus tri. Veitchii climbs using tendrils with tiny, disc-shaped suckers. The three-lobed leaves turn spectacular shades of red and purple in autumn. Leaves are purple when immature and smaller than Parthenocissus tricuspidata. Tiny flowers are greenish-yellow.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to control size and shape, and remove any wayward or overcrowded growth. Regular trimming may be needed to keep the vine clear of gutters, windows, and other structures.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if growth is weak or soils are poor. Established plants generally require little supplementary feeding.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, particularly through the first one to two growing seasons. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally trouble-free, but monitor for aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Occasionally affected by powdery mildew or leaf spot diseases, particularly in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Watch for white powdery growth or spotted foliage. Improve air circulation, remove affected leaves, and apply an appropriate fungicide if problems persist.
