A Heritage Garden Reborn with Timeless Appeal

The Completed Look
Halstead

The Brief
Tasked with reimagining the garden of a heritage property, The Plant Store aimed to restore its classic charm while enhancing street appeal following the removal of a large chestnut tree. The new design needed to maintain privacy and height without the excessive shade of the previous tree. A strategic layout was implemented to incorporate seasonality and ensure light filtration during the winter months.

Why We Chose These Plants
To replace the height lost with the chestnut tree, Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) was chosen for its ability to be pleached. This technique allows the tree to provide necessary height in a narrow space, ensuring light penetration in the winter while maintaining dense foliage in the warmer months.

Choisya ternata forms the backbone of the hedging around the property. Its evergreen nature helps to unify the garden during the winter months, complementing the over-arching Hornbeam and adding classic charm with its bright, aromatic flowers.

Close to the house, Buxus sempervirens (Boxwood) was used to frame the garden beds, providing a structured edge that complements the traditional architecture of the home. This evergreen shrub maintains its neat appearance year-round, requiring only minimal trimming to keep its shape.

In a sheltered nook by the house, Acer osakazuki was introduced. This small tree complements the brickwork of the house and fits perfectly within the scale of the garden, providing stunning fall colors that contrast beautifully with the surrounding greenery.

For summer-long color and texture, Hydrangea Limelight was planted under the Acer, its show-stopping flowers in summer bringing vibrancy to the garden. The ground was densely planted with Pachysandra terminalis, providing a lush, evergreen carpet that ties the entire planting scheme together.

In narrower areas along the house, where fullness was needed without compromising window views, Chatham Island Forget-me-not was used for its refined foliage and subtle blooms, enhancing the layered planting approach.

This carefully curated plant palette not only compliments the heritage of the house but also ensures that the garden remains a low-maintenance, visually stunning space suitable for a magazine, requiring only biannual trimming to maintain its pristine appearance.
