Hosta Gold Standard

Hosta Gold Standard is a popular perennial known for its striking foliage, featuring large, heart-shaped leaves with vibrant golden centres and rich green margins. These leaves provide a stunning contrast, adding visual interest to shaded garden areas. In summer, the plant produces tall spikes of lavender flowers, adding a delicate touch of colour above the bold foliage. Hosta Gold Standard is an excellent choice for bringing brightness and texture to your garden.

Hosta Gold Standard is perfect for use in shaded garden beds, borders, and as a ground cover. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers well-draining, moist soil rich in organic matter. This plant is relatively low maintenance, making it ideal for gardeners of all levels. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist and maintain the vibrancy of its foliage.

For optimal growth, plant Hosta Gold Standard 60 to 90 cm apart. This spacing allows each plant to develop fully and ensures good air circulation, which helps prevent disease. At maturity, Hosta Gold Standard reaches a height of about 50 to 60 cm and a spread of approximately 90 to 120 cm, making it a substantial yet elegant addition to any garden.

Trimming: Trim back the foliage of Hosta Gold Standard in late autumn after the leaves have died back. Remove any dead or damaged leaves during the growing season to maintain a neat appearance.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower stalks after flowering to encourage further flowering and keep the plant tidy.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct dosage to support vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Hosta Gold Standard prefers well-drained soil to prevent root rot.

Pest Control: Watch for slugs and snails, which are common pests for Hostas. Use slug pellets, traps, or barriers to control them. Check for aphids and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Disease Management: Hosta Gold Standard is generally disease-resistant but can be susceptible to fungal diseases like leaf spot and crown rot. Ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid overhead watering. Remove and destroy any affected leaves and treat with a fungicide if necessary. Maintain good garden hygiene to minimise disease risk.
