Trimming: In late winter (or as new shoots appear), cut away last season’s tired, leathery leaves right down at the base to reduce disease and show off the flowers. Remove any yellowing or damaged foliage at any time.
Deadheading: After flowering, snip off spent flower stems at the base to keep plants tidy and stop self-seeding (leave a few if you’d like seedlings).
Fertilising: Top-dress in early spring and again in autumn with compost or well-rotted manure. A light sprinkle of a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring helps strong growth - avoid heavy, high-nitrogen feeding.
Watering: Keep evenly moist while establishing (first season), watering deeply when the top few centimetres of soil dry out. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, especially in summer, but don’t let it sit in soggy soil.
Pest control: Watch for aphids on soft new growth and flower stems - blast off with water or use insecticidal soap if persistent. Slugs/snails can chew new shoots; use traps, barriers, or iron-based baits.

Black spot (hellebore leaf spot): dark, round spots that can merge and yellow the leaf - remove and bin affected leaves, improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and consider a copper-based fungicide if it keeps returning.

Downy mildew: pale patches with greyish growth underneath - remove affected foliage, reduce humidity around plants, and treat with an appropriate fungicide if severe.

Hellebore “black death” (viral): black streaking/blotches and distorted growth - there’s no cure; remove and dispose of the plant and disinfect tools to prevent spread.
