How to Know What Will (and Won't) Work

You'll usually find out mid summer or mid winter if a plant isn't right. That's when extremes hit hardest - dry cracks, soggy roots or windburnt leaves show up.

Quick Site Checklist

  1. Sun: Full, part or mostly shade?
  2. Soil: Does it drain quickly or stay wet?
  3. Wind: Is the spot exposed, sheltered or variable?
  4. Space: Can the plant grow freely or is it restricted?
  5. Purpose: Do you need screening, edging, colour or cover?
