Nandina domestica Gulfstream, commonly known as Heavenly Bamboo, is an evergreen shrub that offers year-round visual delight. This compact, bushy plant is a favourite for its multi-seasonal appeal, featuring a vibrant array of leaf colours that range from bronze and orange tints in new growth to shades of blue-green, gold, and red in mature leaves. During the cooler months, the foliage transforms into striking shades of red, purple and oranges, adding a rich, warm hue to your garden. The plant is highly adaptable, thriving in various climatic conditions and is particularly well-suited for sunny locations where it reaches its full-colour potential.
Not just a feast for the eyes, the Gulfstream also produces tiny white star-shaped flowers in the warm summer months, which are rich in nectar and attract bees and other pollinators. These flowers are often followed by bright red berries that persist through fall and winter, adding another layer of interest to your landscape. With a growth height and width of up to around 100cm, this low-maintenance shrub is perfect for mass planting, container gardening, or as an informal hedge. For optimal growth, it is recommended to plant it in fertile, free-draining soil and to include a generous helping of organic matter at the time of planting.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove any damaged or dead branches. Light pruning throughout the year can help maintain its compact form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vibrant foliage and healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, Nandina Gulfstream is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during very dry spells.
Pest Control: This plant is generally pest-free. However, occasionally check for aphids or scale insects. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations are detected.
Disease Management: Nandina Gulfstream is resistant to most diseases. Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to prevent any fungal issues. If leaf spot or root rot occurs, remove affected parts and improve drainage around the plant.
