Phormium Emerald Gem is a compact, tidy New Zealand flax with vibrant green, sword-like leaves that form a neat, arching clump. Smaller than many other Phormium varieties, it offers strong visual structure without overwhelming nearby plants. Its fresh foliage remains attractive year-round, adding bold texture and colour to garden compositions.
Perfect for edging, mass planting, containers, or mixed borders. Suits coastal, contemporary, native, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Performs best in full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained soils. Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional watering in extended dry periods. Space plants about 60 cm apart to maintain shape and airflow.
Reaches approximately 60 cm tall and 60–80 cm wide, forming a dense, architectural mound.
Trimming: Remove spent or damaged leaves at the base as needed to maintain a tidy, compact shape. For specimen plants, occasional thinning of older foliage can help rejuvenate growth.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Emerald Gem is valued for its foliage; flower spikes may be removed after flowering if desired for tidiness.
Fertilising: Apply a controlled-release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong, vibrant growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which can cause excessive soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Emerald Gem is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free but may occasionally attract scale insects. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure well-draining conditions and avoid overwatering. Remove any rotting or discoloured foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
