Our 5L Buxus Sempervirens bring instant structure, evergreen strength and timeless style to formal gardens, contemporary spaces or anywhere needing definition. 60% off. Strong plants. Instant results. Spend five years growing these yourself or just plant them now.

Buxus sempervirens, commonly known as English Box, is a classic evergreen shrub favoured for its lush, dark green foliage and versatility in shaping. With its dense, slow-growing habit, this species is ideal for formal hedging, topiary, and structured planting. It responds well to regular trimming and provides year-round structure and greenery.

Well suited to formal, Mediterranean, and traditional garden designs, it is often used to define borders, pathways, or create feature shapes.

Plant in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. For hedging, space 30–40 cm apart to achieve a dense, uniform effect.

Mature size: Reaches approximately 1.5 metres high and wide if left untrimmed, forming a dense, rounded shrub.

Trimming: Trim lightly in late spring to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. For hedging or topiary, trim two to three times during the growing season, with the final cut no later than late summer to avoid frost-damaged regrowth.

Deadheading: Not required, as Buxus is grown for its year-round foliage rather than flowering.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which may promote weak, sappy growth vulnerable to pests and disease.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and throughout prolonged dry periods. Ensure soil is free-draining to prevent waterlogging, particularly important in heavier soils or containers.

Pest Control: Watch for Buxus psyllid and leafminer—signs include cupped or blistered leaves. Treat with horticultural oil or an appropriate systemic insecticide if needed.

Disease Management: Prone to Buxus blight and root rot. Look out for sudden leaf drop, black spots, or dark lesions on stems. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove infected material promptly. Apply fungicide if symptoms persist.
