The Brief
The primary objective for this garden was to create a fresh, low-maintenance space that tied in seamlessly with the contemporary black and white aesthetics of the house. The clients desired a clean, green look with minimal input and upkeep. The planting plan focused on defining the property’s boundaries with greenery while maintaining a crisp, simple appearance that could be expanded upon in the future if desired.

Why We Chose These Plants
The design begins with a clean perimeter hedge of Griselinia littoralis, chosen for its hardy, evergreen foliage and low-maintenance requirements. This hedge serves as the backdrop of the garden, softening the property’s borders while offering privacy. Once established, the hedge only requires an annual trim, making it an ideal solution for the owners' request for a hassle-free garden.
To ensure the garden retained a cohesive and structured appearance, Lomandra Lime Tuff was planted in a single line along the narrow spaces. Its soft, grassy texture mirrors the greenery of the Griselinia hedge, creating a unified look. The simplicity of using a single plant variety in this area keeps the space clean and free from the cluttered appearance that can result from mixing different plant types. Lomandra Lime Tuff is particularly favoured here for its drought tolerance and minimal care needs, fitting the low-maintenance brief perfectly.
Pyrus calleryana Aristocrat was selected as a key feature tree, adding height and structure to the garden with its upright form and beautiful spring blossoms. Its tolerance to a range of conditions and low maintenance make it an ideal choice for this project, offering visual interest with minimal input.
For additional height and to frame the house’s entry, Laurus nobilis standard was planted. This elegant, evergreen tree provides structure and creates a formal yet simple appearance, tying in with the overall green and white palette of the property.
Finally, Chatham Island Forget-me-not was included as a ground cover in key areas to provide seasonal interest with its beautiful blue flowers. This hardy, native plant also requires minimal care, fitting well with the low-maintenance focus of the garden while introducing a unique textural element and vibrant colour contrast.
This garden exemplifies a fresh, clean, and green aesthetic, perfectly aligned with the clients’ desire for minimal upkeep. The carefully selected plant palette ensures that the garden remains attractive year-round, requiring only a small amount of care to maintain its neat, structured look.
