Laurus nobilis - Standard

• Trimming: Lightly trim to maintain a neat lollipop crown. Do main shaping in late spring to summer, with small touch-ups as needed. Remove any shoots from the trunk and any suckers from the base promptly to keep a clean standard stem.

• Fertilising: Feed in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser. For standards in pots, use a controlled-release fertiliser in spring and a liquid feed every 2–4 weeks through the warmer months. Avoid heavy feeding in late summer/autumn.

• Watering: Water regularly through the establishment phase (first 12–18 months), keeping the root zone evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, water deeply during extended dry periods. Container standards dry out faster - check moisture often in summer and water when the top few centimetres of mix feel dry.

• Pest control: Watch for scale, aphids, mealybug and thrips (sticky honeydew, sooty mould, leaf distortion). Treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, repeating as directed. In NZ, protect from possum browse where relevant.

• Disease management: Look for root rot (wilting despite moist soil, blackened roots) and leaf spot (brown/black patches, premature leaf drop). Improve drainage/avoid overwatering, remove affected leaves, and increase airflow. Copper-based sprays can help with persistent leaf spot where appropriate; for root issues, reduce watering and consider repotting container plants into fresh, free-draining mix.
