Must-Have Plants to Keep Your Garden Lively and Fragrant This Winter

Winter doesn't have to spell the end of colour and fragrance in your garden. Even with the falling of leaves, and bare branches, winter can be a wonderful season, and your garden can transform even the greyest of days into a scene of beauty. I’ve put together a list of vibrant plants that will add a splash of colour, burst of fragrance, or just a touch of grace to contrast our harsh Kiwi winters. Here are my go-to plants that ensure your garden remains an appealing spot all year round.

Brighten Your Winter Landscape With These Beauties

Cornus alba Sibirica (Siberian Dogwood) - Pictured Above

The striking red and coral stems of the Cornus Alba stand out beautifully against the winter grey and are a visual treat when frosted over. This deciduous shrub is low-maintenance and adapts easily to most soil types, adding a splash of colour and structural elegance to your winter garden.

Known for flowering in the depths of winter and staying vibrant for months, the distinctive, upward-facing flowers of pink, green, and cream of the Helleborus offer a serene touch to any winter garden. Its evergreen foliage is an added bonus, providing lush greenery throughout the year.

Camellia Avalanche

A showstopper in any garden, the Camellia Avalanche boasts plentiful white flowers that appear in late winter. Its glossy foliage stays vibrant throughout the year, making it an excellent backdrop for other seasonal stars. It’s perfect for a shady spot and thrives both in pots and planted directly in the soil.

Viburnum davidii

This low-growing, evergreen shrub is celebrated for its adaptability and the turquoise-blue berries and leathery, dark green foliage it sports in winter, following its small white spring flowers.

Skimmia

The clusters of red berries and aromatic, glossy leaves of Skimmia cheer any winter landscape. Female plants are particularly eye-catching with their berries, while male plants feature fragrant flowers that eventually turn into berries. It’s an excellent choice for shady areas and looks fantastic in containers.

Pieris (Lily-of-the-Valley Shrub)

Pieris provides year-round interest with cascades of white or pink bell-shaped flowers in early spring and vibrant red or bronze new leaves in the winter. It’s a great border shrub that thrives even in a bit of shade.

Nandina GulfstreamNandina Gulfstream (Heavenly Bamboo) - Pictured Right

Heavenly Bamboo is not just for the warmer months; its leaves change colour throughout the year - fresh green in spring, rich red in autumn, and purplish red in winter. Its white blossoms and bright red berries throughout winter add to its appeal.

Sarcococca (Sweet Box)

For those looking for robust and low-maintenance options, the Sarcococca, with its glossy green foliage and black berries, is perfect. It produces intensely fragrant flowers from late winter to early spring and thrives in the shade.

Viburnum Eve Price

A popular choice for its clusters of pinkish-white flowers from late winter to early spring and blue-black berries, Viburnum Eve Price is versatile, tolerating both sun and shade.

Erica

Hardy and vibrant, Erica is perfect for adding a swath of colour in the colder months with its bell-shaped flowers in pink, white, and purple. It's ideal for rock gardens or borders and thrives in acidic, well-drained soil.

The Right Plant in the Right Place

Incorporating these plants into your garden is about more than just filling spaces; it’s about strategic design. Position plants like the Cornus Alba where they can bask in the winter sun, illuminating their bright stems, and consider layering your landscape with early bloomers like Helleborus under deciduous trees.
