Shady garden spots can be some of the coolest spaces in your landscape.

You just need the right plants. And here’s your heads up: Lavender isn’t it.

Low light, dry roots, tricky soil, and shade all call for a different toolkit. But that doesn’t mean fewer options. These eight plants aren’t just fillers. They’re doers: groundcovers, climbers, structure, texture. Each one pulls its weight.

What You’ll Need in Shade

Shade doesn’t mean bad. But you do need a mix of:

  • Groundcovers to hold space and stop weeds

  • Structural plants to anchor the eye

  • Fillers that give texture and seasonal lift

Measure first. Don’t crowd them. Let them grow.

Plant in spring. Feed once they’re settled. Water when dry. That’s it.

From drab to fab.

The Standouts

Michelia figo (Port Wine Magnolia)
Hedge it or let it shine on its own—the scent is that good. A compact evergreen that holds its form and adds structure in shaded spots.

Helleborus ‘Ice & Roses Red’
Flowers in winter when everything else gives up. Loves dry shade and cool roots. Tucks perfectly under trees or near the front step.

Chionochloa flavicans (Mini Toetoe)
Soft grasses in the shade? Yes. Feathery plumes and movement for that ferny, natural look. Handles dry, sloped areas well.

Bergenia ‘Snowtime’
Tough-as-boots groundcover with glossy leaves and crisp white flowers in winter. Ideal under shrubs or where you want clean edges.

Aucuba japonica (Japanese Laurel)
Brightens dark corners with bold, spotted leaves. Great for coastal or urban shade where not much else thrives.

Pachysandra ‘Green Sheen’
One of the best weed-smothering groundcovers for deep shade. Shiny, dense and low-fuss.

Camellia ‘Avalanche’
Evergreen structure with tidy, white blooms in autumn. Good as a screen or informal hedge in filtered light.

Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine)
Use it as a climber or let it sprawl as a groundcover. Scented white flowers in summer and evergreen leaves all year.

With the right mix of plants, even the shadiest spots can become standouts. Think layers, structure, and seasonal interest, and give each one room to shine. Shade doesn’t limit your choices. It just asks you to choose better. And now, you’ve got eight great ones to start with.
