Malus domestica Monty's Surprise is a remarkable New Zealand-bred apple known for its exceptionally high levels of antioxidants and natural disease resistance. The large fruit has green skin with a red blush and crisp, juicy flesh with a well-balanced sweet-tart flavour. Ripening in mid- to late Autumn, it's excellent for fresh eating, juicing, and long-term storage.
Ideal for home orchards, permaculture plantings, and health-focused edible gardens, especially where minimal spraying is preferred.
Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and regular moisture. Partially self-fertile, but benefits from cross-pollination with varieties such as Liberty or Granny Smith for improved yields.
Mature size: Vigorous and upright, typically growing 4–5 metres high and wide as a free-standing tree, or smaller on semi-dwarfing rootstock.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to maintain an open canopy and strong framework. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve airflow and light penetration, which supports healthier growth and better fruit production.
Deadheading: Not applicable for apple trees.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it clear of the trunk, to enhance soil structure and conserve moisture.
Watering: Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first few years and during fruit development. Ensure soil drains well to avoid waterlogging and root issues.
Pest Control: Monitor for codling moth, apple sawfly, and aphids. Use pheromone traps to track moth activity and treat aphids with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Maintain good hygiene by clearing fallen fruit and leaves.
Disease Management: 'Monty’s Surprise' is noted for strong disease resistance, particularly to apple scab. Still, watch for signs of powdery mildew or canker. Prune to maintain good airflow, remove any infected material promptly, and apply fungicide only if needed. Keep the area beneath the tree clean to reduce disease risk.
