Viburnum (2)

Every spring we get enquiries asking what the beautiful hydrangea flowering right now is. It's not actually a hydrangea - it's a viburnum!

Those crisp white pom-poms or tiered lacecaps lighting up gardens from Auckland to Invercargill? Classic deciduous viburnums. These are cold-hardy, fast to establish, and among the most dependable spring feature shrubs for NZ conditions.

Why viburnums matter in NZ gardens

Deciduous viburnums bring structure, scent and seasonal change. Most are tolerant of cold, clay, and part shade once established. Some flower for weeks. Others add autumn leaf colour too.

They’re perfect for mixed borders, clipped hedges or as standalone specimens near entryways and patios.
