Viburnum plicatum Mariesii, commonly known as the Wedding Cake Shrub, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the Adoxaceae family. Native to China and Japan, this plant is a versatile addition to any garden, suitable for mixed borders, beds, or even as a large specimen shrub. It can also be used for informal hedging. The shrub grows to a height of 4 metres and a spread of 3 metres. It thrives in a variety of soil types, from acidic to alkaline and prefers full sun to dappled shade. The dark-green leaves, which turn red-purple in the autumn, beautifully contrast with the large white lace-cap spring flowers. It's an ideal choice for Japanese garden schemes and requires minimal maintenance - just an annual mulch of well-rotted manure or compost.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. After flowering, light pruning can be done to tidy the plant and promote bushier growth.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers after flowering to keep the plant looking neat and to encourage new growth.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional feeding in mid-summer can be beneficial, especially if the soil is nutrient-poor.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Viburnum mariesii prefers consistently moist soil. Water deeply during prolonged dry periods, ensuring the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Pest Control: Watch for common pests such as aphids, scale insects, and viburnum beetles. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of fungal diseases like powdery mildew and leaf spot. Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery coating on leaves, while leaf spot presents as dark spots on the foliage. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues. Proper soil drainage is crucial to prevent root rot. Remove and dispose of any infected leaves to prevent the spread of disease.
