The Laurus nobilis Columnar is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region that is tall, narrow, and column-shaped. It has glossy, dark green leaves and small yellow-green flowers in the spring, which are followed by black berries. This plant is valued for its aromatic leaves, which are used in cooking and as a spice, as well as its ornamental value as a topiary plant or privacy screen. Laurus nobilis Columnar grows best in well-drained soil and in full sun to partial shade. It is drought tolerant and can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C. The plant requires little care and is simple to grow, making it a popular choice for gardens and patios.
Trimming: Clip little and often to keep a crisp column, light trims in spring and again in late summer are ideal. Remove any shoots that break the outline, plus any suckers from the base. If it gets too large, reduce gradually over 2–3 seasons rather than cutting back hard all at once.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a top-dress of compost. If grown in a pot, use a controlled-release fertiliser in spring and a light liquid feed monthly through summer.
Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once established in the ground, water during extended dry periods (deep soak rather than little-and-often). For pots, water when the top few cm of mix are dry, don’t let it sit wet, especially in winter.
Pest control: Check new growth for scale, aphids and thrips (sticky leaves, speckling, or sooty mould). Treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, and rinse foliage to remove honeydew. Keep the column open enough for airflow and avoid overfeeding (soft growth attracts pests).
Disease management: Watch for root rot in poorly drained or overwatered sites (yellowing, wilting despite moisture, blackened roots). Improve drainage and let the root zone dry slightly between waterings. Bay can also get leaf spot in humid, sheltered conditions, remove affected leaves, avoid overhead watering, and thin lightly to improve airflow.
