Crassula Argentea

Crassula argentea, commonly known as the Jade Plant, is a hardy, evergreen succulent valued for its thick, glossy, jade-green leaves and strong, branching structure. In late summer to autumn, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped white to pale pink flowers that attract pollinators. Its sculptural form and ease of care make it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor settings.

Ideal for coastal, rock, and contemporary gardens, Crassula argentea is perfect for container planting, succulent displays, or as a structural accent in dry garden designs. It thrives in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established. Avoid overwatering and protect from frost. Space approximately 50 to 80 cm apart in garden settings.

Forms a rounded, branching shrub reaching around 1 to 2 metres high and 1 metre wide.

Trimming: Prune lightly to shape the plant and encourage branching, especially if it becomes leggy. Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed. Pruning can be done at any time but is best in spring or early summer during active growth.

Fertilising: Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer. Avoid fertilising in winter when the plant is dormant.

Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering further. Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent root rot.

Pest Control: Watch for mealybugs and scale insects, particularly in the leaf joints. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Wipe down leaves regularly to keep pests at bay.

Disease Management: Root rot is the main concern, usually caused by overwatering. Ensure excellent drainage and do not let the plant sit in water. Remove any soft, discoloured leaves and inspect roots if rot is suspected.
