Bulbine frutescens

Bulbine frutescens is a hardy, clump-forming succulent perennial known for its fleshy, grass-like leaves and upright spikes of star-shaped yellow or orange flowers, which appear from Spring through to Autumn. The flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects, while the plant’s drought tolerance makes it an excellent low-maintenance choice.

Ideal for rock gardens, borders, and waterwise landscapes, it suits Mediterranean, coastal, and dry-tolerant garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Thrives in poor, sandy conditions and requires minimal water once established. Remove spent flower stems to encourage ongoing flowering. Space plants 30–40cm apart for ground coverage.

Mature size: Low and spreading, reaching approximately 30–40cm tall in flower and 50–60cm wide.

Trimming: Trim back flower stalks once they have finished to tidy the plant and encourage repeat flowering. In late winter or early spring, cut back any straggly or damaged foliage to refresh the clump and promote dense, new growth.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flower spikes to encourage prolonged flowering and prevent self-seeding if not desired.

Fertilising: Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils or containers, a second light feed in mid-summer can support continuous blooming. Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to overly lush growth with fewer flowers.

Watering: Water moderately during establishment, then reduce frequency. Bulbine frutescens is drought-tolerant once established and prefers infrequent, deep watering. Allow soil to dry out between waterings, especially in cooler months.

Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests. Occasionally, aphids may appear on flower stems—treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Very low disease risk. Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot, particularly in wet or humid climates. Remove any decaying foliage to maintain airflow and cleanliness.
