Stachys byzantina

Stachys byzantina, commonly referred to as Lamb's Ear, is a perennial herbaceous plant known for its distinctive, soft, velvety silver-grey leaves. This plant has become a favorite in gardens worldwide due to its tactile foliage and ability to act as a ground cover. In the summer, Stachys byzantina produces tall spike-like stems bearing small, purplish-pink flowers, adding a vertical dimension to its sprawling habit. While the flowers are attractive to pollinators, it's the unique texture and color of the leaves that make this plant stand out. Thriving in well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade, Lamb's Ear is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal care. Grows 15cm tall not in flower and 50cm approx. when in flower, and can spread up to 30-90cm.

Trimming: Trim back dead or damaged foliage in early spring to encourage fresh growth. After flowering, cut back flower stems to the base to maintain a neat appearance.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to promote new growth and keep the plant looking tidy. This can also help prevent the plant from self-seeding excessively.

Fertilising: Stachys byzantina typically does not require much fertilisation. If growth appears sluggish, apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Stachys byzantina is drought-tolerant and prefers dry to moderately moist soil. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but occasionally susceptible to aphids and slugs. Treat aphid infestations with insecticidal soap and control slugs with organic slug pellets or by hand-picking.

Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of leaf spot and root rot. Leaf spot appears as dark spots on the leaves and can be treated with fungicides. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Improve soil drainage to prevent root rot, and remove any affected foliage to prevent the spread of disease.
