Virgilia divaricata is a fast-growing, evergreen to semi-deciduous tree native to South Africa. It is celebrated for its soft, fern-like foliage and showy, fragrant pink to mauve pea-like flowers that appear in abundance from late spring through summer, attracting bees and birds. Its rounded canopy and graceful form make it a beautiful feature or shade tree.
Best grown in full sun with well-draining soil, Virgilia divaricata suits subtropical, coastal, and informal garden styles. It establishes quickly, tolerates light frost, and benefits from a sheltered position in colder areas. Plant with 4–5 metres spacing. At maturity, it reaches around 6–10 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide, offering fast-growing structure and seasonal colour.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a balanced shape and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the tree’s natural, graceful form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy foliage and abundant flowering, particularly in nutrient-poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods to maintain vigour.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young trees may attract aphids or scale; treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Virgilia divaricata is usually disease-resistant but may suffer from root rot in poorly drained soil. Ensure good drainage and avoid excessive watering to prevent fungal problems.
