Ulmus Lobel, commonly referred to as the Upright Elm, is a robust and visually striking deciduous tree that stands out for its upright growth habit and exceptional hardiness. Originating from the Dorschkamp Research Institute in the Netherlands, this hybrid elm features bronze-coloured new leaves that mature into a deep green, eventually turning a vivid yellow in the autumn. With a mature height and spread of 15 x 8 metres, Ulmus Lobel is perfect for lining large avenues, acting as a hardy screen, or serving as a remarkable street tree.

Not only is Ulmus Lobel highly resistant to Dutch Elm Disease, but it is also coastal and drought-hardy, making it an excellent choice for landscapes in exposed areas. Its small, rough leaves are closely arranged on short branches, forming a dense, pyramidal crown that provides ample shade. If you're looking for a tree that combines visual appeal, hardiness, and functional benefits, Ulmus Lobel is the perfect addition to your garden, streetscape or landscape.

Trimming: Prune Ulmus Lobel in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote a strong structure and good air circulation.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilisation, which can lead to weak, overly lush growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist. Once established, Ulmus Lobel is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and elm leaf beetles. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular inspections help prevent severe pest problems.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of Dutch elm disease, a serious fungal disease. Early symptoms include yellowing and wilting leaves. If detected, remove and destroy affected branches and consult with a tree care specialist. Ensure good air circulation to minimise disease risk and maintain overall tree health.
