Tilia cordata - small leaved Lime. Mid-green, heart-shaped leaves that turn yellow in autumn. Clusters of small, fragrant creamy-white flowers cover the tree in summer. Suitable as a specimen, shade tree, for pleaching, pollarding or coppicing. Prefers a shelter position in full sun to semi shade. Ideally plant in moist, well-drained soil. Hardy. Deciduous. 15m x10m.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to remove dead/damaged wood and to shape. If used as a formal pleached/hedged form, clip in mid–late summer to maintain a neat outline.
Fertilising: Apply compost in spring. On very poor soils, a balanced slow-release fertiliser can help young trees establish.
Watering: Deep-water through the first 1-2 summers. Mature trees cope well but benefit from watering during extended dry periods, especially in hotter sites.
Pest control: Aphids are common (sticky honeydew on leaves/cars below). Encourage beneficial insects, wash leaves with water, or use insecticidal soap; avoid spraying when bees are active.
Disease management: Sooty mould grows on honeydew (black film) - treat the aphids and gently wash foliage. Watch for leaf spot (brown/black patches); rake up fallen leaves.
