Salix matsudana Pendula is a graceful weeping willow valued for its slender, cascading branches and soft, narrow green foliage that moves beautifully in the breeze. In late winter to early spring it produces small catkins along the stems, adding subtle seasonal interest before the canopy fills out. Its flowing form makes it an excellent feature tree near water, in larger lawns, or as a focal point in spacious gardens.
Perfect for parkland, cottage, or contemporary garden styles, Pendula grows best in full sun and prefers moist soil, coping well in heavier ground that stays evenly damp. Water well while establishing and during dry spells, especially in warmer months, and allow plenty of room for the branches to sweep down as it matures. Space plants 6-10 m apart from other trees and structures to accommodate its spread.
Mature size: Reaches around 6-10 m in height and 6-10 m in width, forming a broad, sweeping canopy with strongly weeping branches.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while dormant to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain a balanced, weeping form. Young trees benefit from formative pruning to establish a strong structure.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth. In nutrient-poor soils, a second light application in mid-summer can be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it thrives in moist soils and benefits from deep watering in dry periods. Avoid allowing the soil to completely dry out, especially in summer.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale, and caterpillars, particularly on new growth. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil as needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to rust, canker, and leaf spot in damp conditions. Prune to improve airflow, remove affected foliage promptly, and avoid overhead watering. Ensure soil is free-draining but consistently moist to reduce stress-related disease risk.
