Quercus robur

Quercus robur is a broad, spreading, short-trunked tree needing plenty of space - often seen in parks and public gardens. Large, mid-green leaves turn yellow in autumn. Ideal for drives and around ponds or for shade on the lawn; also grown to produce valuable durable timber. Trees long-lived; tough, does well in most situations but best in moist soils. Reasonably wind-hardy.

Trimming: Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter; avoid heavy pruning.
Fertilising: Rarely required. Use compost or a slow-release general fertiliser in spring only if growth is weak (especially in poor soils).
Watering: Deep-water during establishment (first 1-2 summers). Once established, water only in extended dry periods. Mulch helps conserve moisture.
Pest control: Watch for aphids and caterpillars (leaf nibbling/holes). Encourage birds; use Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) if caterpillars are severe.
Disease management: Look for powdery mildew (white coating) in humid conditions - improve airflow and avoid overhead watering. Also watch for leaf spots (dark patches); rake up fallen leaves to reduce reinfection.
