Quercus palustris, also known as the pin oak, is a species of deciduous tree native to North America. It is a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 25m tall, with a distinctive pyramidal shape and drooping branches. The leaves of the Quercus palustris tree are deeply lobed and have a glossy, dark-green colour that turns to a reddish-brown in the autumn. The acorns produced by the tree are oval-shaped and brown. The pin oak tree is a popular choice for landscaping and is often used in parks and gardens due to its attractive foliage and shape. It is also valued for its hardiness and its ability to adapt to a range of soil types.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead/damaged branches and to lift the canopy if needed. Avoid heavy pruning.
Fertilising: Apply compost in spring. If leaves yellow between veins (chlorosis), avoid fertiliser and instead address soil pH (often too alkaline).
Watering: Water well during establishment; Pin oak is more tolerant of moist soils than many oaks but still benefits from deep watering in dry spells.
Pest control: Watch for aphids and scale (sticky honeydew/sooty mould). Treat scale with horticultural oil in late winter; manage ants that protect sap-suckers.
Disease management: Chlorosis is common on alkaline soils (yellow leaves with green veins). Use chelated iron and mulch with organic matter; long-term fix is soil acidification where appropriate. Watch for leaf blister/leaf spot - remove fallen leaves.
