Prunus serrula
Notify MePrunus serrula, commonly known as Tibetan Cherry, is a striking deciduous tree admired for its polished, mahogany-brown bark that peels in glossy layers, revealing rich copper tones beneath. In spring, it produces small white flowers that contrast delicately with the dark bark, followed by fine green foliage that turns yellow in autumn before falling to expose the tree’s beautiful winter trunk.
Ideal for formal, woodland, and contemporary gardens, Prunus serrula is best used as a feature tree where its ornamental bark can be fully appreciated year-round. It thrives in full sun with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Space approximately 3 to 4 metres apart when planting in groups.
Forms a graceful, upright tree reaching around 6 to 8 metres high and 4 to 5 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches, and lightly shape to maintain the tree’s natural form. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can stress the tree and lead to poor healing.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season will support healthy growth and overall vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but performs best with consistent moisture. Ensure soil is well-draining to prevent root issues.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for aphids on young shoots. If needed, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Susceptible to silver leaf and bacterial canker. Always prune in dry weather and during late summer to minimise infection risk. Remove and destroy affected wood immediately. Ensure good airflow around the canopy and avoid overhead watering.
