Liquidambar styraciflua

Liquidambar styraciflua - American Sweet Gum. Forms a stately, pyramidal tree with well-spaced branches and corky bark.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to remove dead/damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning; maintain a clear central leader on young trees.
Fertilising: Compost in spring is usually enough. If growth is slow in sandy soils, use a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment; Liquidambar performs best with reliable moisture. Deep-water during heatwaves and prolonged dry spells.
Pest control: Watch for aphids and scale (sticky residue, sooty mould). Use horticultural oil for scale in late winter; insecticidal soap for aphids.
Disease management: Powdery mildew can occur (white film on leaves) - improve airflow and avoid overhead watering. Root rot in poorly drained sites shows as wilting and dieback; improve drainage and avoid overwatering.
