Larix decidua, commonly known as European Larch, is a fast-growing, deciduous conifer known for its soft, bright green needles that turn a rich golden yellow in autumn before falling. In spring, it produces small, pinkish-red female cones and light green male cones.
Thriving in full sun with well-draining soil, Larix decidua suits woodland, parkland, and large rural garden styles. It tolerates cold conditions well and prefers open spaces where it can develop its broad, graceful shape. At maturity, it typically reaches 20–30 metres tall with a spread of 8–10 metres.
Trimming: Requires little pruning; remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter while the tree is dormant. Avoid heavy cuts as this may disrupt its natural form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring only if growth appears weak or needles look pale; typically unnecessary in nutrient-rich soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase (first 1–2 years), especially during dry spells. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods.
Pest control: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally be affected by larch adelgids. Look for signs such as distorted growth or premature needle drop, and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease management: Susceptible to Phytophthora root rot in poorly drained conditions – improve drainage and avoid overwatering. Watch for signs of larch canker, such as sunken lesions and resin bleeding; affected trees should be assessed and removed by a professional.
