Howea forsteriana
Notify MeHowea forsteriana, commonly known as Kentia Palm, is a graceful, slow-growing palm native to Lord Howe Island, prized for its arching, feather-like fronds and slender, ringed trunk. Its elegant form and tolerance of lower light make it a favourite for indoor use, while also performing well in sheltered outdoor gardens.
Ideal for subtropical, tropical, and coastal gardens, Howea forsteriana suits container planting, shaded courtyards, or as an understorey feature in protected landscapes. It prefers part shade to filtered sun, with rich, free-draining soil and consistent moisture. Space approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart when planting in groups.
Forms a single trunk with a spreading crown, reaching around 6 to 10 metres high and 3 to 4 metres wide at maturity.
Trimming: Remove yellowing or fully brown fronds at the base using clean, sharp secateurs. Do not trim green fronds, as this can slow growth and weaken the plant. Avoid cutting too close to the trunk to prevent damage.
Fertilising: Feed every 6 to 8 weeks during spring and summer with a liquid fertiliser formulated for palms, or apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
Watering: Water when the top 3 to 5 cm of soil feel dry. Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Ensure the container or soil has good drainage, and reduce watering during the cooler months.
Pest Control: Check regularly for spider mites, scale and mealybugs, especially on the undersides of fronds. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Root rot can occur if soil is too wet. Signs include wilting, browning fronds and a sour smell from the roots. Improve drainage and reduce watering if symptoms appear. Avoid cold, damp locations and provide good airflow to reduce fungal risk.
