Hedyscepe canterburyana

Hedyscepe canterburyana is a rare and slow-growing palm native to Lord Howe Island, valued for its striking, arching fronds and solitary trunk marked with prominent rings. The dark green, feather-like leaves have a silvery underside, creating a bold contrast and adding year-round tropical appeal. Its compact growth and unique form make it a standout feature in sheltered landscapes.

Ideal for subtropical, tropical, and coastal gardens, Hedyscepe canterburyana is best suited to protected courtyards, feature planting, or container growing in frost-free areas. It prefers part shade with consistent moisture and well-draining, humus-rich soil. Space approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart in the landscape.

Develops a solitary trunk and upright crown, reaching around 3 to 6 metres high and 2 to 3 metres wide over time.

Trimming: Remove only dead or fully browned fronds, cutting close to the trunk with clean, sharp tools. Avoid trimming green fronds, as this can weaken the palm and slow growth.

Fertilising: Feed with a slow-release fertiliser suitable for palms in early spring. In cooler climates or poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and foliage colour.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase. While somewhat drought-tolerant once established, it prefers regular watering during dry periods. Do not allow the soil to completely dry out.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally check for scale or mealybugs on the undersides of fronds. Wipe affected areas and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Avoid overwatering and remove any fronds showing signs of fungal infection or black spotting. Good airflow around the plant helps prevent moisture-related issues, particularly in humid or shaded areas.
