Hazelnut Whiteheart

Corylus avellana Whiteheart produces small, round hazelnuts that are primarily used for processing and provides good yields. The nuts ripen from red-orange to brown in late summer to early autumn. Whiteheart is appreciated for its productivity and its role in commercial nut processing.

Whiteheart is ideal for home orchards and edible landscapes, offering a reliable harvest that can be utilised in various culinary applications. It is a superb choice for gardeners looking to incorporate productive plants into their landscape while ensuring consistent yields.

This hazelnut tree fits well in cottage gardens, woodland gardens, and formal garden settings. Its adaptable nature allows it to integrate seamlessly into both structured and naturalistic designs.

Plant the Hazelnut Whiteheart in a sunny spot to ensure the best nut production. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with moderate moisture levels. Protection from high summer temperatures and strong winds is essential. For optimal growth, ensure an annual average temperature between 12°C and 16°C, with a maximum of 35°C to 36°C and a minimum of -8°C to -10°C. An annual rainfall of 800mm to 1000mm, evenly spread throughout the growing season, is ideal. In areas with prolonged dry periods from late spring to mid-summer, especially in free-draining soils, regular irrigation will be necessary. Space trees at least 4-5 metres apart to accommodate their broad canopy.

For successful pollination, consider planting other hazelnut varieties such as Corylus avellana Alexandra, Corylus avellana Auckland No. 2, or Corylus avellana Merveille de Bollwiller nearby.

At maturity, the Hazelnut Whiteheart reaches a height and spread of approximately 4-5 metres, forming a graceful and rounded silhouette. Its dense foliage creates a lush backdrop throughout the growing season, culminating in a rewarding autumn harvest of small, flavourful nuts.

Trimming: Prune Hazelnut Whiteheart in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to maintain an open, airy structure and promote healthy growth. Regularly remove suckers emerging from the base of the tree.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and nut production. A second application in late spring can be beneficial, especially if the soil is poor.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but well-drained. Once established, Hazelnut Whiteheart is moderately drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry periods to ensure optimal nut production.

Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, hazelnut weevils, and caterpillars. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to treat infestations promptly. Implement proper garden hygiene, including the removal of fallen nuts and leaves, to help reduce pest problems.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of diseases such as Eastern Filbert Blight and bacterial blight. Ensure good air circulation around the tree by proper pruning and spacing. Remove and dispose of any affected plant parts immediately.
