Chamaerops humilis

Chamaerops humilis, commonly known as European Fan Palm, is a hardy, clump-forming palm with distinctive fan-shaped, blue-green to grey-green leaves held on short, spined stems. Its slow-growing, multi-trunked form creates a striking architectural feature, adding texture and structure to both outdoor and indoor settings.

Ideal for Mediterranean, coastal, subtropical, and contemporary gardens, Chamaerops humilis is perfect for pots, courtyards, or as a sculptural focal point in open garden beds. It thrives in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil and is tolerant of wind, salt, and dry conditions once established. Space approximately 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart if planting in groups.

Forms a clumping habit reaching around 2 to 3 metres high and 2 metres wide at maturity.

Trimming: Remove dead or damaged fronds at the base to maintain appearance and promote healthy growth. Avoid cutting green fronds, as they help sustain the plant’s vigour. Use clean, sharp tools to prevent tearing.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for palms in early spring. In containers or nutrient-poor soils, supplement with a balanced liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during hot, dry periods. Allow soil to partially dry out between waterings.

Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects, spider mites and mealybugs, especially in warm or sheltered spots. Remove pests with a damp cloth or treat with horticultural oil if infestations occur.

Disease Management: Generally resistant to disease. Root rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. Remove any fronds showing signs of rot or fungal infection to maintain plant health.
