Betula platyphylla var. japonica, also known as Japanese white birch, is a graceful deciduous tree admired for its smooth, chalky-white bark and upright, open branching habit. Its broad, ovate green leaves provide a lush canopy that shifts to golden yellow in Autumn, creating strong seasonal contrast.
Ideal for woodland, naturalistic, and cool-climate gardens, it serves beautifully as a specimen tree or in group plantings where its bright bark can stand out through winter.
Thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-draining soil. Performs best in temperate climates and benefits from consistent moisture during dry periods. Allow 5–7 metres spacing to support mature development.
Mature size reaches 10–15 metres tall with a softly rounded crown spreading 5–7 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead, damaged, or congested branches. Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the tree’s natural upright habit. Focus on developing a strong central leader in young trees.
Deadheading: Not applicable.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring during the establishment phase. Once mature and growing in fertile soil, additional feeding is generally unnecessary.
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture during the first 1–2 years after planting, especially in dry conditions. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods but benefits from deep watering during prolonged drought.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and leaf miners in spring and summer. Aphids can be controlled with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Leaf miner damage is typically minor but can be reduced by removing affected leaves and maintaining tree vigour.
Disease Management: Susceptible to powdery mildew and leaf spot in damp or shaded areas. Improve airflow and remove fallen leaves to reduce fungal spread. Keep the tree healthy to guard against stress-related decline or potential borer issues. Seek expert advice if you notice signs of dieback or unusual bark damage.
