Betula pendula, commonly known as silver birch, is a graceful deciduous tree recognised for its slender, weeping branches and striking white bark that becomes textured with age. Its light green, finely toothed leaves shimmer in the breeze and turn golden yellow in Autumn, bringing delicate movement and seasonal colour to the landscape.
An excellent choice for woodland, naturalistic, and contemporary gardens, it makes a stunning specimen tree or can be used in groupings to create light-filtering canopies.
Prefers full sun and thrives in well-draining soil, tolerating a range of conditions including poorer, sandy soils. Drought-tolerant once established. Space 5–7 metres apart to allow for mature canopy spread.
Mature size reaches 15–20 metres tall with a light, airy crown spreading 6–8 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late summer or early autumn to avoid sap bleeding. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. For shaped specimens, carry out light formative pruning while the tree is dormant, but avoid heavy cutting as birches dislike major pruning.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Betula pendula does not require deadheading.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring, particularly for young or container-grown trees. A mulch of organic matter around the base (keeping it clear of the trunk) can help retain moisture and add nutrients.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment (first 1–2 years). Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Prefers moist, well-drained soils.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, birch leafminers, and bronze birch borers (less common in NZ). Aphids cause leaf curling and can be washed off or treated with insecticidal soap. Leafminers leave trails or blotches; prune out affected foliage and apply insecticide early if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to fungal leaf spot and canker diseases. Symptoms include brown or black leaf spots, dieback, or sunken lesions on branches. Improve airflow, remove fallen leaves, and avoid wetting foliage. Prune out infected areas and dispose of them—fungicides may be used if issues persist.
