Betula pendula Alba is a classic silver birch cultivar known for its brilliant white bark, which develops early and contrasts beautifully with its fine, weeping branches. Its delicate green leaves shimmer in sunlight and shift to rich yellow tones in Autumn, offering both texture and seasonal colour.
A striking choice for naturalistic, woodland, and contemporary garden designs, it serves well as a specimen tree or planted in drifts for a soft, airy canopy effect.
Performs best in full sun with well-draining soil and is adaptable to a variety of conditions, including poor or sandy soils. Tolerates dry periods once established. Space 5–7 metres apart for mature development.
Mature size reaches 15–20 metres tall with an open, pendulous crown spreading 6–8 metres wide.
Trimming: Minimal trimming needed. Prune in late summer or early autumn to avoid sap bleeding. Remove dead, damaged, or congested branches, especially in the crown, to maintain structure and airflow. Avoid heavy pruning, as birches are sensitive to major cuts.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this variety does not require deadheading.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth, particularly in poor or sandy soils. Mulch annually with organic matter to retain moisture and improve soil health.
Watering: Water well during the first 1–2 years after planting. Once established, Betula pendula 'Alba' tolerates short dry periods but benefits from deep watering during extended drought, especially in light soils. Prefers moist, free-draining ground.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and birch leafminers. Aphids may cause leaf curling—treat with water sprays or insecticidal soap. Leafminers leave brown trails or blotches on leaves; prune affected foliage and use a targeted insecticide if infestation is severe.
Disease Management: Prone to leaf spot and occasional cankers. Look for dark spots or dead patches on leaves and sunken areas on branches. Promote good airflow, clear fallen leaves, and prune out infected growth. Use a fungicide if symptoms persist or spread.
