Azara microphylla
Azara microphylla, commonly known as the Vanilla Tree, is an attractive evergreen tree or large shrub featuring small, glossy, dark green leaves and a refined, upright habit. In late Winter to early Spring, it produces clusters of tiny, yellow, vanilla-scented flowers that bring early-season fragrance to the garden.
Ideal for woodland gardens, sheltered courtyards, or as a screening plant, Azara microphylla thrives in part shade to full sun with moist, well-drained soil. It prefers a sheltered position away from harsh winds and benefits from regular watering in dry periods. Space at least 2–3m apart if planting in groups.
Matures to 4–8m tall and 2–4m wide, forming a graceful, upright tree with year-round foliage and early floral interest.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as it may reduce next year’s flowering.
Deadheading: Not required—the tiny, vanilla-scented flowers are self-shedding and do not need removal.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. In poor soils, supplement with compost or a liquid feed during the growing season.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. Azara prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil but tolerates short dry spells once established.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though occasional aphid infestations may occur on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Typically disease-resistant. Ensure good airflow and avoid waterlogging to prevent fungal issues. Remove any affected foliage promptly if disease symptoms appear.
