Atherosperma moschata, also known as Southern Sassafras, is a graceful, evergreen tree native to New Zealand and southeastern Australia. It features fragrant, leathery green leaves with silvery undersides and produces creamy-white, star-like flowers with a delicate musky scent in late Winter to early Spring.
Ideal for native gardens, sheltered woodland plantings, or as a feature in shaded landscapes, this species thrives in part to full shade with consistently moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Best planted in a frost-free, wind-sheltered location. Allow several metres between trees to support long-term development.
Reaches 10–15m tall and 3–5m wide at maturity, forming a slender, upright tree with aromatic foliage and seasonal floral interest.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can slow growth.
Deadheading: Not required, as flowers are small and self-cleaning.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertiliser in early spring, particularly if grown in poor soil. A layer of mulch can help retain nutrients and moisture.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry periods. Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free, though leaf miners or scale may appear occasionally. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant, but ensure good drainage and airflow to prevent fungal issues. Remove any affected foliage to minimise spread.
