Araucaria heterophylla

Araucaria heterophylla, commonly known as the Norfolk Island pine, is an elegant evergreen conifer admired for its symmetrical, tiered branching and soft, feathery foliage. With its graceful, pyramidal form and fine texture, this tree adds structure and year-round interest to landscapes and is also widely grown as an indoor feature when young. Outdoors, it thrives in mild coastal climates.

A striking specimen for coastal gardens, large landscapes, or sheltered courtyards. Complements formal, subtropical, and modern garden styles.

Prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Shelter from strong, drying winds and avoid frost-prone locations. Allow ample space—5–6 metres or more—away from buildings to accommodate mature size.

Mature size: Reaches 20–35 metres tall in ideal outdoor conditions with a symmetrical, upright form.

Trimming: Pruning is rarely needed. Remove dead or damaged branches as required, ideally in late winter or early spring. Avoid cutting into the central leader or main trunk, as this can distort the tree’s natural symmetrical form.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and again in mid-summer, especially for container-grown or indoor specimens. Mature, outdoor-planted trees generally need minimal feeding if soil is fertile.

Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the establishment phase. For potted plants, water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, but avoid waterlogging. Outdoor trees are moderately drought-tolerant once established but benefit from watering during extended dry periods.

Pest Control: Indoors, watch for scale insects and mealybugs—treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Outdoor specimens are typically pest-free.

Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soil. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid soggy conditions, especially in containers. Maintain good airflow around indoor plants to prevent fungal issues.
