Alnus jorullensis

Alnus jorullensis, commonly known as Mexican Alder, is a fast-growing, evergreen tree featuring lance-shaped, glossy green leaves and long, pendulous yellow catkins that appear in late winter to early spring. This versatile and hardy tree is highly valued for its ability to stabilise soil, fix nitrogen, and thrive in a variety of challenging conditions. Its upright growth habit and year-round foliage make it an excellent choice for screening or windbreaks.

Ideal for coastal gardens, shelterbelts, riparian plantings, or as a shade tree in larger landscapes. Thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a range of soils, including poor or waterlogged sites, though it also performs well in drier soils once established.

Reaches a mature height of 15–20 m with a canopy spread of 6–10 m, forming a tall, slender tree that provides both structure and greenery to the landscape year-round

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Regular pruning maintains a strong structure and encourages healthy growth.

Fertilising: Alder trees can thrive in low-nutrient soils due to their nitrogen-fixing abilities. However, a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring can benefit trees in very poor soils.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Alders are highly tolerant of wet conditions and can thrive in waterlogged or damp soils.

Pest Control: Check for aphids on young growth. Use insecticidal soap or introduce natural predators like ladybirds to manage infestations if necessary.

Disease Management: Generally resistant to diseases but may suffer from root rot in compacted or poorly drained soils. Improve drainage and promptly remove any affected trees or branches.
