Alnus glutinosa

Alnus, commonly referred to as alder, is a deciduous tree that thrives in moist conditions and is often found near streams, rivers, and wetlands. Alnus glutinosa (Common Alder) is particularly valued for its rounded, dark green leaves and ability to improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen. In late winter to early spring, it produces attractive catkins, adding seasonal interest before the foliage appears. Its adaptability and fast growth make it an excellent choice for stabilising soils and adding structure to landscapes.

Ideal for naturalistic gardens, wetland plantings, or as a shelterbelt tree. Grows best in full sun to partial shade and tolerates wet, poorly draining soils, though it also adapts to drier sites once established. Plant in areas with ample space for its broad canopy and spreading roots.

Reaches a mature height of 20–25 m with a canopy spread of 8–12 m, making it a stately tree for larger landscapes.

Trimming: Prune Alnus glutinosa (Common Alder) during its dormant season, typically in late winter. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure.

Fertilising: Alnus glutinosa generally does not require additional fertilising if grown in suitable soil. However, if the soil is poor, apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring.

Watering: Water young trees regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Mature trees are generally drought-tolerant but may benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids and leaf miners. Introduce beneficial insects like ladybirds or use insecticidal soap if infestations become severe.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of canker, such as sunken, discoloured patches on the bark, and leaf spots. Prune affected areas and apply a suitable fungicide. Ensure good air circulation to reduce humidity around the tree, which can help prevent fungal diseases.
