Alectryon excelsus, commonly known as tītoki, is a beautiful evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It features glossy, dark green, pinnate leaves and produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by striking bright red fruits that reveal shiny black seeds. These fruits attract native birds, making it an excellent choice for biodiversity-friendly gardens. Its elegant canopy provides light, dappled shade, making it a versatile option for larger landscapes or as a specimen tree.

Perfect for native gardens, coastal plantings, or mixed shelter belts. Thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a range of soil types, provided they are well-draining. It is hardy in frost-free areas and performs well in sheltered positions. Space trees generously to allow for their mature size and graceful spreading habit.

Reaches a mature height of 8–10 m with a canopy spread of 4–6 m, forming a striking and long-lived feature tree.

Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Minimal pruning is required as Titoki has a naturally attractive form.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Use a fertiliser with a higher nitrogen content for young trees to encourage establishment.

Watering: Water deeply during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Mature trees are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional watering during extreme heat.

Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects or mealybugs, which can occasionally infest the tree. Treat with horticultural oil or a suitable insecticide if necessary.

Disease Management: Alectryon excelsus is generally disease-resistant but ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Remove any fallen leaves or debris to maintain good garden hygiene.
