Agathis australis, commonly known as the Kauri tree, is an iconic and ancient conifer native to New Zealand. This majestic evergreen tree features a straight trunk with smooth, greyish bark that peels in thin flakes, and its dark green, leathery leaves form a dense, rounded canopy. Slow-growing and incredibly long-lived, the Kauri is a symbol of strength and endurance, making it a prized addition to large gardens or park landscapes.
Best suited to native, tropical, or woodland-style plantings, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soils. While its slow growth makes it suitable for planting in spacious gardens during its early years, ensure plenty of space for its eventual mature size.
Mature size: Can reach heights of 30–50 metres with a trunk diameter of up to 3 metres, forming a towering, broad canopy over centuries.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is required for Kauri trees. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches during late winter or early spring to maintain a strong structure. Avoid unnecessary cuts, as they can make the tree susceptible to disease.
Fertilising: Fertilise sparingly with a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Kauris are adapted to low-nutrient soils and excessive fertiliser can harm them.
Watering: Water young or newly planted trees deeply during dry periods to encourage deep root establishment. Mature trees are drought-tolerant and typically do not require additional watering.
Pest Control: Kauri trees are generally pest-resistant. Monitor for signs of borers or scale insects and treat with appropriate insecticides if necessary.
Disease Management: Watch for Kauri dieback disease caused by Phytophthora agathidicida. Symptoms include yellowing leaves, canopy thinning, and lesions on the trunk. Avoid disturbing the roots, as the disease spreads through soil. Use phytosanitary measures such as cleaning tools and footwear before and after contact with the tree. Consult local guidelines for managing and reporting suspected infections.
